In a future devastated by environmental collapse, humanity has found refuge within a vast artificial space. This digital sanctuary provided temporary relief, but now it faces its own crisis – overpopulation, resource scarcity, energy shortages, discrimination, poverty, war, and rampant disease.
A revolutionary program is introduced, offering to free individuals from their physical bodies by digitizing their consciousness, memories, and personalities, allowing them to live in a virtual paradise. However, a catastrophic error corrupts the system, blurring the line between the digital and physical worlds. This instability creates a rift, spilling vast amounts of data into reality.
Among this data, some fragments are corrupted, containing glitches, damage, or malicious viruses. Those who come into contact with this tainted data transform into monstrous beings known as "Bugs." Despite desperate efforts to seal the rift, it continues to expand, threatening to engulf everything.
In a last-ditch attempt to save humanity, the program's creators develop a serum to grant immunity to the digital virus. A courageous Player is chosen to sever connections at key terminals to close the rift. But in a shocking twist, the Player must ultimately face a corrupted version of themselves, now the host of the malware, to protect both worlds.
